Introduction to Government of  Canada

Canada’s system of government

Canada is a federal state, a parliamentary democracy, and a constitutional monarchy

What is a federal state?

A federal state means that the powers and duties of government are split between two levels: one national ( central, or federal)  government, and many smaller regional ( provincial) governments

What is parliamentary democracy?

It is a democratic form of government in which the party ( or a coalition of parties) with the greatest representation in the parliament forms the government, its leader becoming prime minister.

What does constitutional monarchy mean?

A constitutional monarchy is a system of government that is ruled by a king or queen whose power is limited by the constitution.

The monarch’s powers and responsibilities are established and limited by the constitution. The monarch is the head of state, and the prime minister is the head of government.

Q: is Canada a republic?

A: No, to simply define, a republic is a country not having a monarch as the head of state. In a republic, the function of the head of state is usually performed by an elected president.

How government works

Government of Canada has three branches: the legislative, the executive and judicial. Each one has separate powers and responsibilities that are defined in the constitution.

The legislative branch passes laws, the executive implements them, and the judicial interprets them.

Parliament is Canada’s federal legislature.  It includes the monarch ( represented by the Governor General), the Senate and the House of Commons

The executive branch is composed of the monarch, the prime minister and Cabinet.

The judicial branch is made up of a system of courts and tribunals at the federal, provincial and territorial levels.
